Free Comic Book Day - 2018

Comic book geeks unite! It is once again time for Free Comic Book Day. A day put aside to celebrate the quintessential American art form, the comic book. In years past the comic book has had its share of trouble; Being thought of as picture books with drawings of scantily clothed women.

But since the release of the first Iron Man movie nearly ten years ago, comics have had a bit of a resurgence. Even if comic book stores seem to be closing.

But the strong stores such as Green Brain, Comix Oasis and Pack Shack should survive.

Wonder World Comics, once in Taylor and Lincoln Park, should do well in its new location at the old Denniston Theater in Monroe.

This year Free Comic Book Day is supported by “Avengers: Infinity War”. Deadpool Two and Venom come out soon.

Some of the local comic shops will be celebrating the day. They will be giving away free comics. Each store will have their own limits.

There are fifty free titles this year. DC, Marvel, Archie and Bongo will have their annual freebies this year.

Green Brain in Dearborn will be giving away three free comics. But you will have the opportunity to get more by giving to the charities that they are supporting. Green Brain is having a food drive for Gleaners Food Bank. Also, they are collecting gently used books for the Dearborn library and old cell phones for Cell Phones for Soldiers. You can even get an extra comic if you wear a costume. A portion of their sales that day will go to Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit. That is a lot of good being done just by having fun.

Big Ben’s Comix Oasis will be having a costume contest on Free Comic Book Day, along with a signing by Aspen artist Alex Konat from 11 to 2.

Ghostbuster’s Rogue will also be there.

9Planets in Dearborn Heights will have a 3 day extravaganza this year, with a store appearance from the Jedi Council of Michigan on Friday from 12 to 4, the creators of metro Detroit new hit comic #motorcitymo on

Saturday, and the Ghostbusters of Detroit on Sunday.

Also celebrating is The Pack Shack in Taylor, A-Z Cards & Comics in Garden City and Comic City in Canton.

So grab your kids and take them to your nearest shop for a treat. It will help them to read and the two of you might start on a life long hobby together.
