DETROIT, Michigan - Wayne County Treasurer Eric R. Sabree will allow federal workers affected by the government shutdown who live in Wayne County additional time to pay their delinquent property taxes, it was announced today."Given that the federal government shutdown is having an economic impact on workers located in our area, we thought it to be only fair and prudent to offer options to extend their payments," said Treasurer Sabree.

Sabree noted that since the December 22, 2018 shutdown of the "non-essential" workers some 5,000 of whom are in Michigan, his office had received calls and inquiries from workers who say they may not be able to make their scheduled payments.

"We work with people to assist them based on their individual circumstance," said Sabree.

"There are a lot of people who are not getting paid, and they have absolutely no control over that until the shutdown issue is resolved."

Sabree said he wanted to reach out to the community to let everyone know that if they are in danger of keeping up with their payment plan or need help, they can contact the Treasurer's office.

To qualify for the extension, residents must do the following:

*Residents must be an owner-occupant

*Residents must speak with one of the Wayne County Treasurer's Office staff members to fully determine if they qualify for the extension.

*Residents must be a federal employee affected by the government shutdown.

*Residents must provide proper documentation if they are expecting federal benefits which are delayed due to the government shutdown.
