Western Wayne County NAACP Branch Host 22nd Annual Freedom Fund Dinner

November 7, 2019

Fund Dinner is in the books. Keynote Speaker, Michigan

Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II gave the attendees the charge to get involved and let their voices be heard.

On Sunday, Nov. 20th, the Prestige Banquet Hall in Allen Park, Michigan was filled with people of all ages from the youngest members Gabrielle Overman (2 years old) and Parker Johnson (3 years old) to 98 year old Roy Wilson, the Lifetime Achievement Honoree. What was also encouraging was the number of Millennials that were in attendance. When Trailblazer Honoree, Jaylia Washington, asked everyone under 35 to stand, it seemed that over 1/3 of the room proudly stood to their feet.

That was the branch's goal and it tied to the theme for this year's dinner; 'Our Future Is Now, Stand With Us'.

The other honorees were Great Expectations-Congresswoman - Rashida Tlaib, Freedom & Justice-Judge Deborah Thomas, Community Service-Seeds2Feed Foundation and Leading Through Service/ Elected Official- Commissioner Glenn Anderson.

Special thanks to the Master of Ceremony- Keith Crispen who kept the program exciting, Paris Jones whose Spoken Word inspired everyone and Freedom Fund Dinner Chairperson Dakima Jackson whose vision was accomplished. Lastly President Gina Steward wants to say thank you to everyone that attended and helped to make the event a success. A special thank you to the sponsors; Beaumont, UAW Local 900, DTE Energy, Telegram Newspaper, Starfish Family Services, Westland Police Department, Michigan Guardian Services, Wayne

County Executive-Warren Evans and Operation Refuge

The November 11th General Membership Meeting will be held at the Van Buren Township City Hall 46425 Tyler Rd. and will begin at 7:00pm.
