Detroit Institute of Arts Millage Up for Renewal in March

On March 10, the Art Institute Authorities of Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne Counties are seeking a millage renewal to ensure the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) can continue offering residents across southeast Michigan access to its vast art collection which encompasses both history and culture.

Thanks to the 2012 millage approval, over 2 million tri-county residents enjoyed free general admission to the DIA from 2013 to 2019. The millage has been an educational boost for students in the tri-county areas as well. Each year, more than 70,000 students across the region participate in DIA programs, enjoying free bus transportation and free admission. More than 1,500 teachers use DIA programs to supplement in-class curriculum.

"The DIA millage has benefitted Macomb County residents by providing free admission for families and free K-12 field trips with transportation," says Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel.

In addition to students, senior citizens, veterans, and community groups are able to partake of the culture the museum's collection provides. The Alzheimer's Association Greater Michigan chapter, in conjunction with the DIA, hosts its Minds on Art Program for those living with Alzheimer's disease and their caregivers to have a chance to socialize and experience all the museum has to offer.

"The DIA has been a long-standing gem in our community," says Alisha Bell, chair of the Wayne County Commission. "The programs for our seniors and children have proven to be an excellent mechanism to further expose art to those who may not otherwise have that opportunity."

The renewal rate being requested is 0.2 mils, which is the current rate, and will continue to cost $15 a year for a home valued at $150,000. The renewal will enable the benefits tri-county residents are enjoying from the DIA to continue. All funds are independently audited and reported on a public website to ensure transparency in the spending of taxpayer dollars.

Voters should check with their local city or township clerk to ensure they are registered to vote.

"Great regions invest in the quality of life of their residents," says Wayne County Executive Warren Evans. "These programs ensure this world-renowned cultural asset will remain accessible and welcoming to all of our residents."
