Kwame Kilpatrick is out of prison. Donald Trump has commuted the prison sentence of former Detroit mayor Kwame Malik Kilpatrick, freeing him 20 years early from his jail time for corruption crimes.

Kilpatrick, 50, was sentenced to 28 years in prison in 2013 for bribery, racketeering, extortion and fraud while he held public office.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, his earliest possible release date was January 18, 2037.

Before leaving office, President Donald Trump pardoned 73 people and commuted the sentences of 70 people.

The White House statement regarding Kilpatrick stated: "President Trump commuted the sentence of the former Mayor of Detroit, Kwame Malik Kilpatrick. This commutation is strongly supported by prominent members of the Detroit community, Alveda King, Alice Johnson, Diamond and Silk, Pastor Paula White, Peter Karmanos, Representative Sherry Gay-Dagnogo of the Michigan House of Representatives, Representative Karen Whitsett of the Michigan House of Representatives, and more than 30 faith leaders.

"Mr. Kilpatrick has served approximately 7 years in prison for his role in a racketeering and bribery scheme while he held public office. During his incarceration, Mr. Kilpatrick has taught public speaking classes and has led Bible Study groups with his fellow inmates."

President Donald Trump commutes Kilpatrick's sentence

Kilpatrick arrived at the Atlanta airport in Georgia a free man on Wednesday, January 20th . He was met by many of his family members. Although he is out of prison, he still has a huge financial responsibility that he has to pay. Kilpatrick will still be required to pay $4,779,826 in restitution along with a special assessment of $2,400. and serve three years on probation.

President Trump actually signed the Executive Grant of Clemency on January 13, 2021.

Kwame Malik Kilpatrick served as a Democratic Michigan State Representative from 1997 to 2002 and Mayor of Detroit from 2002 to 2008. He resigned after being convicted of perjury and obstruction of justice
