An attack on one is an attack on all

March 18, 2021

Tuesday night's string of attacks at Atlanta day spas is yet another disgusting and disturbing example of how the spread of domestic terrorism has been allowed to torment minority communities.

There have been prominent voices promoting this virulent hate speech before, but the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and parallel rise of misinformation has intensified these attacks.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been over 3,000 recorded hate incidents against the Asian American community, along with concern that law enforcement has been slow to investigate the incidents.

Let me be very clear: These attacks are part of a larger trend of racism and nationalism sanctioned by white supremacy.

President Biden's words, and that of other Congressional leaders, condemning the recent acts of hate makes it even more apparent that we need a comprehensive set of actions that actualizes a commitment to dismantling the decades of systematic and structural racism that has upheld white supremacy and allowed for the reoccurrence of violence and hate toward Asian Americans and other marginalized communities.

The NAACP believes that this comprehensive set of actions should include:

Immediate and deep investment in the Asian American community, Uniform Crime Reporting agencies, local compliance with the Hate Crime Statistics Act, and a strategy to combat hate speech from government officials and candidates.

The NAACP was founded on multiracial ally ship and community organizing. Now more than ever we must stand together, united against racial violence in all its forms. An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.

I am asking you to take action today by joining the NAACP in condemning the hate and violence inflicted upon Asain Americans. If you support taking comprehensive actions to dismantle systemic racism in the United States, take a moment to add your name now:
