New Westland Community Health Center to Offer Wide Range of Healthcare Services

September 9, 2021

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on September 1 to celebrate the opening of the new Westland Community Health Center, located at 35700 Warren Road. Governor Gretchen Whitmer was on hand to congratulate city leaders on the new facility, along with elected officials from the state, county, and local levels. "Today as we open the brand new Westland Community Health Center, this is a $10 million state-of-the-art facility and it's going to be staffed by some of the most dedicated medical experts who will offer Westland residents access to high-quality care close to home. The community is incredibly grateful for everyone who came together to make this a reality," Whitmer said in her remarks.

The new health center is the result of a cooperative effort between the city of Westland and Garden City Hospital, a member of Prime Healthcare System. "Garden City saw it as an opportunity to expand their capabilities and prospects for servicing the community and this facility opened up, it's a great fit," said Westland City Councilman James Godbout. "Overall, it's a great investment as Garden City Hospital's Board recognized the need in Westland and stepped forward and offered to serve that need. It's going to enable us as a community-particularly our EMS services-to have someplace closer, quicker to get to."

Attendees of the ribbon cutting event were offered tours of the new health center which includes an emergency department with 14 private rooms and two trauma bays, x-ray and CT scan facilities, a full-service lab, a gym and physical therapy, and an outpatient family medicine clinic. "Since 1947, Garden City Hospital has been at the center of the community and we've worked hard to build trust and improve the health of our community," said Garden City Hospital CEO Saju George. "With the opening of Westland Community Health Center we are able to provide expanded access to healthcare for the people of Westland and the neighboring communities."

The Westland Community Health Center occupies the building that was once the home of Malarkey's Irish Tavern and the long-shuttered David's Bridal Shop. Garden City Hospital purchased the property in 2017. Westland Councilwoman Tasha Green welcomes the new facility and says, "Openings of hospitals and businesses of this kind not only brings job creation, but also more home investment, home buying, and investment right here in our local economy." Nearly 100 jobs will be created as the facility begins operations this month.

"We're thrilled to celebrate the official opening of the Westland Health Center," said Mayor William Wild. "Westland has always enjoyed an incredible working relationship with the team at Garden City Hospital. Our residents will now benefit greatly from having access to emergency medical services right here in our community."
