On January 30, Animal Resource Funding Foundation (ARFF) partnered with the city of River Rouge to bring resources to residents to assist with the care of family pets. River Rouge Mayor Michael Bowdler joined with Woodhaven Mayor Patricia Odette, Board President for ARFF, to bring straw and igloo dog houses, toys, treats,5,000 pounds of dog and cat food, and leashes for pets in River Rouge. The event was held at the River Rouge Fire Station on W. Jefferson Ave.

River Rouge Deputy Clerk Bridgette Bowdler says this year's outreach event was the largest to date, thanks to generous donors. The event is held once a year each winter, to provide a helping hand to pet owners by way of education about keeping outdoor pets warm in the cold Michigan weather. Recipients of dog houses were instructed on the proper use of straw to keep the houses warm and snug for pets without allowing the straw to become soggy and frozen.

"It was a huge success, a huge success! We were so excited; it was like Christmas for the animals," said Bowdler. "I'd like to thank ARFF because they put in so much time and donations, it was amazing, and they do it every year."

Although the outreach program is only held once a year, Bowdler says the true heroes for the animals in the city are the volunteers at the city's animal shelter, Shelter Manager Patricia Trevino, and Animal Control and Ordinance Officer Brian Daugherty. "They work diligently with the citizens and animals on a daily basis and we are lucky to have them," she says. In 2013, the shelter was the recipient of Roverhaul, a project managed by the Michigan Humane Society and done in conjunction with Lowe's Home Improvement Stores, who provided materials and workers for much-needed renovations. The shelter received a new sink, fencing, flooring, and a washer and dryer. In the years since, other supporters have stepped up and provided additional renovations to the building, including the shelter's security system

Bowdler wants residents to remember it is law in the city to have your pets licensed. Pet licenses fees are $6 if the pet is spayed or neutered and $12 if they are not. Proof from your veterinarian is required along with a rabies shot certificate. Pet licenses can be obtained at the River Rouge City Clerk's Office, located in City Hall at 10600 W. Jefferson Ave.

Bowdler applauds the assistance of the city's DPW crew and supervisor, William Campbell, the No Kids Without a Christmas Crew, and the many volunteers who helped make the event a success. Bowdler says more than 100 residents benefitted from the day's event.
