A Sweet Return: Peoples Bakery and Restaurant

The picture shows our customers standing in line for their Thanksgiving pies.

It is the first African American owned and operated bakery in the Downriver Area and the community welcomes its return. Like many other businesses affected by COVID19, the beloved bakery had to pause and pivot. During the closure, the temporary void was felt deeply. The holiday dessert tables, grabbing sweets to share with coworkers on the way to work or just satisfying a sweet tooth just wasn't the same for a while. But now we can exhale and enjoy the beloved treats from Peoples Bakery once again.

Peoples Bakery is known for its famous Sweet Potato Pie! Other popular items include: Egg Custard Pie, Caramel Cake, German Chocolate Cake, Lemon Tarts, Glazed Donuts, Creampuffs and Cronuts! These menu staples are still available with original recipes. Peoples has added German Chocolate Pie featuring the nutty, chocolatey gooey goodness that makes the German Chocolate Cake such a delectable hit! It's the German Chocolate Cake, but next level! Perfect for those who prefer pies over cakes.

It began in 1955 as Cephus Bakery and Restaurant. Even though the name would later change to Peoples Bakery and Restaurant, the recipes and loving neighborhood spirit would remain the same. New owners, Valente Martin and Jessica Williams are committed to keeping the same spirit with the traditional recipes intact and the introduction of new items on the expanded menu which has been well received. The pair breathed new life into this historic business in November 2020.

Destiny united these two to keep a dream alive. They purchased the business and it is an expression of their passion for providing enjoyable quality eating and serving the community. Valente grew up in the neighborhood and frequented the bakery often while growing up. Jessica went to college with the son of one of the previous owners and was fond of the family recipes. Both are driven to move the business forward and continue to grow.

It's not just a bakery! Peoples has an amazing food menu that will rescue you when you don't have time to prepare a home cooked meal, but you want to get that same home cooked feeling on the go. The restaurant menu includes favorites like: Porterhouse, T-Bone and Lamb Chop dinners, cheeseburger and hot dog combos, salads and more. Peoples also sells grocery items to save you time when you need to grab essentials without leaving the neighborhood. At Peoples you can pick up grocery items like milk, eggs, sliced cheese, sour cream, cereal, butter, bread, buns and fresh, frozen or canned fruit and vegetables.

Due to COVID, as a precautionary measure, Peoples is a walk up Bakery and Restaurant. There is no dine-in option at this time, but customers can now review the full menu online at http://www.pbar.live/menu and place orders. The phone number is 313-551-5656. Orders can also be placed via Facebook messenger through the business' Facebook page and can be pre-paid through CashApp ($PBARLIVE). Orders are prepared and made ready for pickup at the agreed upon day and time.

While the majority of customers are from the Tri-City area (River Rouge, Ecorse and SW Detroit) and Lincoln Park, people come from all over to enjoy their favorite sweets. There are regulars who routinely make the trip from Ann Arbor, Southfield, Farmington Hills, other parts of Metro Detroit. Peoples customers have migrated all over the U.S. and still return home for their 'must have' desserts. Nationwide shipping will be available in the future so that loyal relocated customers can enjoy Peoples without leaving their state.

It is no secret that Peoples has been a favorite of local celebrities, but Peoples considers ALL their customers 'celebrities.' They have a new signature program called VIP (Very Important Peoples) for frequent customers who earn bakery deals and special gifts featuring new menu bakery items. Be sure to ask how to join. Peoples is currently open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays from 12pm - 5pm and delivery is offered 7 days a week when order is placed in advance with a delivery fee of $10. Location hours will expand in coming months.
