Where to Find a Good Fish Dinner During Lent

It's Lent once again, a time many Christians pay special attention to personal spiritual discipline. It's also a time to enjoy a delicious fish dinner each Friday. Restaurants in metro Detroit and Downriver have all variety of seafood on their menus including Crab Kitchen in Westland, Rogala's Bar and Grill in Garden City, Scotty Simpson Fish and Chips in Detroit, and any Captain Jay's location. Read on for more locations where you can find a great Friday night fish meal.

In Flat Rock Elks will hold fish dinners on March 18, April 1 and 15. Dinner options are your choice of hand-battered shrimp or cod dinners available in individual or family sizes. Individual Cod Dinner ( ½ pound) is $13 and Shrimp Dinner is $14. Family size dinners will feed four and feature either 2 pounds of cod or 28 shrimp. All dinners include French fries, coleslaw, hush puppies, dinner roll and condiments. Dinners are served 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. and are drive-thru or carry out only. The Flat Rock Elks Lodge is located at 26917 Telegraph Road.


In Ecorse, St. Andre Bessette Parish will host a Fish Fry each Friday during Lent from 4 to 7 p.m. Dinners will be curbside pick-up only and will feature baked or fried cod, salmon patties, and shrimp. Side dishes include baked potato, fries, coleslaw, and mac and cheese. Prices range from $5 to $10. Pre-order by calling 313-383-8514, ext. 17, or 734-288-7996 or simply drive up and a volunteer will take your order. The church is located at 4250 W. Jefferson Avenue.

In Westland, the Hellenic Cultural Center will host a Lenten Seafood Buffet each Friday during Lent from 5 to 8 p.m. Cost for dine-in is $16 for adults and $11 for children under 10. Dine-in buffet includes soup, baked or fried cod, fried calamari, pasta, coleslaw, French fries, and vegetable. Cost for carry out dinner is $13 for adults and includes 3 pieces of cod, fries, coleslaw and dinner roll. Carry out dinner for children is $10 and includes chicken fingers and fries. Fried calamari on the side will be available for $6. The Hellenic Cultural Center is located at 36375 Joy Road.


In Detroit, the Sweetest Heart of Mary Catholic Church will host a Friday Fish Fry each Friday during Lent from 4 to 8 p.m. Dinner options include baked flounder, grilled shrimp, baked or battered cod, and pierogis, and include your choice of fries or mac and cheese, along with coleslaw, bread and coffee. Dine in or carry out. The church is located at 4440 Russell Street at Canfield. Call ahead for carry out at 313-831-0533.


In Garden City, St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church will host a Fish Fry each Friday during Lent from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Dinner options include beer battered haddock, baked haddock and shrimp and include your choice of mashed potatoes or fries, coleslaw, and roll. Additional sides will be available; prices range from $3.50 to $13. The church is located at 31530 Beechwood, west of Merriman Road.

In Wayne, the Knights of Columbus Notre Dame Council will host a fish dinner each Friday during Lent from 5 to 9 p.m. Cost for adults is $6; children 12 and younger are free. Dinner includes fried fish, coleslaw, and fries. Add shrimp for $3. Knights of Columbus is located at 3144 S. Wayne Road.

In Wyandotte, Our Lady of Scapular Church will offer a carry-out fish dinner every Friday during Lent from 3 to 7 p.m. Beer battered cod dinners will be $8, $9, and $10 and include potatoes, coleslaw, and roll. Pierogis will be available along with Polish Dill Pickle Soup. The church is located at 976 Pope John Paul II Avenue.
