This past spring, the Griot, a book club organization, presented $300.00 worth of books to the Kemeny Recreation Center, 2260 W. Fort Street, Detroit. Members appearing in the below photo are Mrs. Ramona Ewell and Mrs. Gloria Bradley as they placed Griot book plates inside each book. Below is the narrative given to me regarding the history of the group. (A griot is considered to be a storyteller, a narrator.)

Griot began in 1993 from the vision of members Marilyn Gray and Gloria Bradley. It was their desire to read more books by African American authors. Letters were sent to friends and family members asking them to join. Approximately 16 people attended the first meeting held at Edmond Place, a Detroit restaurant. It has been a tradition of Griot to donate books to children and adults every year.

Griot is committed to continuing the tradition of inviting new friends through common interest in reading and discussion which broadens our perspective of the world and people.

The library is patterned after Dr. Samuel B. Milton's library located at the Sidney A. Sumby Hospital. Check it out! We also accept donated books in good condition for children, teen and adult. All books are inspected and placed on book carts for the public to freely select, take home and read!! This is a TAKE HOME, READ AND DO NOT RETURN LIBRARY!!
