WESTERN WAYNE COUNTY NAACP Announce their "2022 FREEDOM FUND DINNER" HONOREES

September 29, 2022

It is with great pleasure that we announce our 2022 Western Wayne County NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner. Our speakers for the dinner will be Byron Brooks – Activist and Founder of "From The Hood for The Hood" and Laura Dickerson – UAW Region 1A Director. This year is historic as we celebrate our 75th Anniversary. The theme for this year is:

"Accelerating Change Despite the Odds"

Our Honorees for this year are:

LifeTime Achievement: Mable Stroman, Elected Official/Service: Erika Geiss, Exceptional Leadership: Rev. Arthur Willis, Sr., Freedom, and Justice: Judge David Perkins, Exceptional Service to the Community: Black Family Development,Trailblazer Award: Tarence Wheeler and Great Expectations: Peyton Kitchen and Eldridge Ross.

This will be our first in person dinner since the COVID-19 pandemic, which led us to do things differently. We're having a traditional sit-down dinner where we can meet old friends and make new ones. During the Awards Ceremony of the event, we will honor people who are making a difference in our communities. Also, during the event, we will reflect on the rich 75 years of activism that the Western Wayne County Branch has been involved in. Acting President Velma Jean Overman says," The Western Wayne County NAACP looks forward to the power of our collective voices. We live in a society where those that need the most among us are clearly and intentionally left out of the narrow pathways to success. It's time to increase our effort to bring equitable outcomes to our own neighborhoods."

The branch was initially charted as the Inkster Branch in June of 1947. We are continuing to grow as we build partnerships with people, businesses, organizations, and elected officials throughout the Western Wayne County area. These relationships are helping us fight to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights without discrimination based on race.
