Garden City Fire and Police Departments Host Open House

October 13, 2022

The Garden City Fire Department's Open House allowed members of the community to get up close with a real fire truck.

On Saturday, October 8, both the Garden City Fire and Police Departments hosted a joint Open House event to welcome residents in to meet firefighters and police officers and get a peek at each department's operations.

Both departments had an array of vehicles on display for youngsters to explore. Police officers provided a variety of displays and demonstrations including the department's drone, which is useful for surveilling large-scale events or searching for a suspect or missing person. The department's K-9 "officer" Blue and his handler, Officer Stanley were on hand to greet guests as they toured the department's facilities and were able to handle the type of gear police officers use on a daily basis.

Young people tried out the impairment goggles at the Garden City Police Department's Open House to get a feel of what it it like to take a sobriety test during a traffic stop.

At the fire station, Chief Catherine Harman and her staff welcomed residents and provided fire prevention information to coincide with National Fire Prevention Week. "Today's event is our yearly Open House and it impacts the community because we are allowed to spread the word for fire safety," saidGarden City Fire Marshal John Smith. "Next week is the beginning of Fire Safety Week across the country and this year's theme is Fire Won't Wait-Plan Your Escape. This event allows us to give people information about how they should plan for the ability to get out of their house in case of a fire." Smith added that state funding provides the department the resources to furnish city residents with a smoke detector for their home.

"It's also our 60-year anniversary as a full-time fire department," added Harman. "What this does is offers us another opportunity to let the public bring their children and they can touch trucks and see what the fire stations is like." She said firefighters will be doing presentations in the schools throughout the fall to teach fire safety to children.

If you are a resident of Garden City and are in need of a smoke detector for your home, contact Fire Marshal John Smith at [email protected] or call 734-793-1749.
