Inkster, MI—The Unity in the Community Service Corp celebrated the work and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. by feeding the less fortunate and homeless in their city and providing each person reached with a personal care kit. The service activity was a collaborative event participated in by the Inkster Task Force, Inkster Housing Residents Council, Hearts That Care, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s Eta Iota Omega Chapter, Zeta Phi Beta’s Zeta Nu Zeta Chapter, Middle Park Manor Block Club, Community Up, National Christians in Action, the Michigan Metro Chapter of Top Ladies of Distinction and Springhill Missionary Baptist Church. They were also assisted by youth from the participating organization’s youth groups.

The groups began early on MLK Day preparing lunches that would be distributed across the city of Inkster in an effort to provide at least one meal for the day to those whose resources are meager. Over 100 lunches were prepared. Each organization took a quadrant of the city and visited homes and areas known to be populated by the homeless.

Unity in the Community is a subgroup of the Inkster Task Force and sponsors many events and community service activities including its annual Easter Egg Hunt and Marshmallow Drop, the Backpack Giveaway, participation in the Inkster C.U.P. Juneteenth Celebration and more. These events and activities bring to life their mission which is “To Uplift Humanity with Dignity, Respect and Caring”
