Critical Race Theory (CRT) seems to be one of the latest buzz words and concepts being heard lately. So much so that the news has reported on it and that some lawmakers and others want to ban the concept of Critical Race Theory. But first, let's dive into what this theory entails!

According to research, Critical Race Theory, is actually an academic and legal framework that denotes that systemic racism is part of the American society and that's according to http://www.naacpldf.org. Across the board, many African Americans have experienced racism in areas that other races in America aren't affected by. Some areas include but aren't limited to education, housing, employment and healthcare.

Despite the efforts of some to fight back and combat the banning of Critical Race Theory, there are some who's efforts are geared to banning this theory. Those individuals simply insist on advocating for a "patriotic education". Let's be open and honest, being patriotic in this country for people of color, especially African Americans, it's never been a good thing. Furthermore, advocating for a "patriotic education" defeats its own purpose because, it denies the truth about the history of our nation.

Is this a new concept/theory? No, it is not! Actually, legal scholars in the 70s and 80s developed Critical Race Theory after the Civil Rights Movement. Now the question to ask yourself is, "Why was there a need for this theory?" CRT purpose was birthed out of responding to the idea that society and institutions in America were and still are "colorblind". If you were to ask others, some would say America isn't colorblind at all but makes the conscious choice everyday to not accept the truth and to completely ignore the reality of the pain, suffering and many other problems that are being experienced still today. It is quite interesting that after more than 400 years, America looks at the fact that slave ownership and segregation is outlawed that racism doesn't exist.

Since racism does exist and it runs through the veins of our society, it should be our duty to care about Critical Race Theory. We should care enough to take the time to really dive in and understand how you have the power to help make some changes. CRT recently came into fire and attack after the 2020 election in which former President Trump was in office. He signed an Executive Order on combating race and sex stereotyping. That executive order then became the blueprint for states to create their own bans on the truth that reappeared in State legislation. Here's the interesting fact about the 2020 election, the Black voters went to the election polls in record numbers. The crazy things about that election season (2020) were that various states passed some of the strictest voting laws in decades.

So, when we talk about how can I help create change, that is a duty and concept that no matter your race, religion, origin, etc., there is something that you can do. Let's start with voting. It must become an important task to you that you don't miss any elections, from the presidential to your local mayoral and any others that may be called in your area. It's highly important that your state legislations hear from you, your voice and opinion. Yes, you are able to contact them via email or phone. Then the local school board meetings, do you know what ideas and what budgets are being set forth by the school board? If not, change that behavior. Can more be done or are we just going to sit back and continue to let things be the way they are? Critical Race Theory, do you think it should or shouldn't be banned?

As Black History Month comes to an end, is Critical Race Theory going to be talked about after February 28th? I implore you to do more and make sure that it is.
