Montford Point Marine Corps League Detachment #158 Celebrates Black History Month

On Saturday, February 11, 2023 the community came out to celebrate Black History with the Montford Point Marine Corps League Detachment #158. Complete with red blazers and pride, the members mingled with the attendees and supporters. They shared their history of being the first African American Marines back in 1942.

Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib stopped in to support State Representative Joe Tate and the Montford Point Marines

During the evening, they recognized four of their living legends; Eugene Owens, Ernest Thomas, Billy Thomas and Erin Love. The men overcame years of racism as they served the United States of America.

The guest speaker for the evening was Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives, Joe Tate. Tate is a Marine Corps Veteran and talked of his desire to be a servant. After playing in the NFL, he didn't know where his career would lead him, but his time in the Marines, proved to be the foundation for the career he has now. Joe Tate is a part of Black History as he is the First Black Speaker of the House in the Michigan Legislature.

The Montford Point Marines Corps League Detachment #158 meets the third Sunday of each month at 13721 Joy Rd in Detroit 48228.
