Justice for Blacks should be same as for Whites

Derrick Johnson - NAACP President and CEO

On the evening of Thursday, April 13, an unarmed Black teen named Ralph Yarl was shot in cold blood by a white homeowner for ringing the wrong doorbell.

The crime was clear. The prejudice was obvious. Yet, it took a national outcry for action to force prosecutors to seek justice for a Black person the same way they would a white person.

This injustice cannot stand: the NAACP is calling on Congress to pass immediate law enforcement reform to ensure ALL Americans are swiftly served and protected - regardless of the color of their skin. Will you stand with us by signing your name to our petition.?

Let's be clear - what happened to Ralph is further evidence of what we already know:

Many of those who are supposed to 'serve and protect' us do not value our lives the same way they value those who look like them.

The sad reality is, we know that if a Black man shot a white child, the legal system would have moved swiftly to charge the assailant.

If we are a nation of righteousness and justice, we must hold all criminal offenders accountable for their actions, regardless of race.

It is HIGH time that we enact the substantial reform necessary to hold our law enforcement officials accountable for upholding their oath and pursuing justice for ALL Americans.

Please, friend: will you join our fight for EQUAL protection under the law by standing with the NAACP now and demanding Congress pass immediate law enforcement reform.

Sign your name to the petition on http://www.naacp.org
