Wayne-Westland Community Schools to Host Hands-On Career Day for 8th grade Students

Wayne-Westland Community Schools is pleased to announce the College and Career Readiness Department will host a hands-on career day for 8th grade students on Thursday, May 18, 2023 from 8

a.m. to 2 p.m. This exciting event will take place at Hype Athletics, 4635 Howe Rd., Wayne and is aimed at giving students the opportunity to explore different career options and get a taste of what life is like in various professions.

"The mission of Wayne-Westland's College and Career Readiness Department is to provide students with opportunities across their K-12 career that will build their awareness and provide exposure to a wide variety of career pathways," said Daryl Beebe, Executive Director of College and Career Readiness and Social Emotional Learning. "Discover Your Path will provide our students with a hands-on opportunity to build their awareness around careers in the skilled trades, military, cosmetology, health, police, fire, construction fields and more. This event will give them a glimpse into a wide variety of career pathways that may interest them and help steer their high school path. We are targeting our 8th graders as they will begin their high school journey in the fall.

"

Discover Your Path will feature a range of activities and demonstrations, giving students the chance to engage with professionals from a variety of industries. Students will have the chance to ask questions, interact with experts in their fields, and learn about the different educational paths that can lead to a career in their area of interest.

"Our goal is for students to learn about the wide variety of career options available to them, what they need to achieve a career in that field, opportunities within the field, how some of the classes they take in school relate to their desired career pathway," said Maria Mitter, Supervisor College and Career Readiness. "

We want to get them excited about their future! So often students don't feel that high school has any relevancy to the real world. If students can connect their learning to their future, perhaps they will have a richer experience in high school. A student who hates math, but wants to be an electrician may begin to excel in math when they can understand how math is used throughout the skilled trades."

Please join us for Discover Your Path to see students get excited about their future.
