The Western Wayne County NAACP announces their 2023 Freedom Fund Dinner. The keynote speaker for the dinner will be Derrick Johnson who serves as President and CEO of the National NAACP. In a pivotal moment in history during the midst of the Pandemic in 2020, Derrick Johnson led the We are Done Dying Campaign, exposing the inequities embedded into the American healthcare system and the country at large.

The theme for this year is: We are Here! Moving Forward to Repair and Resolve with Power

During the Awards Ceremony of the event, individuals who have made a commitment to making a difference in our communities will be honored. The Honorees for this year include; Judge Karen Braxton – Community Leadership; Mayor Lamar Tidwell – Elected Official; Laura Dudgeon –

Freedom and Justice; Robert Wilson – Lifetime Achievement; Saif Alsenad – Trailblazer; Operation Refuge – Exceptional Service to the Community and Sean Tinsley, Shane Tinsley & Akil Alvin – Great Expectations. Western Wayne County NAACP President Gina Wilson Steward says, "It gives me pleasure to take time in our dinner to recognize people in our community who put others before themselves as they work to make our area a better place for everyone."

The branch is continuing to grow and build partnerships with people, businesses, organizations and elected officials throughout the Western Wayne County area. These relationships are helping us fight to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights without discrimination based on race.

The Freedom Fund Event will take place on Sunday, October 15, 2023 from 4:00‐8:00 p.m. at the SoHo Grand Banquet and Event Center located at 34615 Warren Rd in the City of Westland.
