No Child Left Behind: The Community Celebrates A New School Year

The Summer season is coming to an end. Graduating seniors of 2023 are making their transitions to adulthood, while current students are rising through the ranks themselves. After a safe Summer filled with family and friendly fun, it is finally time for the hallways to be filled and opened up again. Through the weekend the community has banned together to ensure that students have everything they need before the first day of school.

Micalah Matthews and Chaunsey Moore of Monumental Mentoring Group kicked things off for their yearly backpack giveaway. The group set up shop at Kemeny Center. Monumental Mentoring is an organization for young men to be tutored, mentored, and groomed for the future. The group places its values in community, and family. Monumental hosts Father's Day, back to school giveaways every year. The group has even sponsored a flag football program.

Up next River Rough hosted their annual backpack giveaway. All were welcomed, but students and youth were given the priority. The line for families to receive credentials for backpacks stretched down Schafer. The line for free shoes wrapped around the back of the building. Which was only steps away from the first carnival of its kind.

The community must continue to come together to meet the needs of the people we expect to care for it one day. Events of this caliber only assist the neighborhood. Luckily for all of us they continue to evolve and expand their reach.
