Inkster Police Department host Senior Safety Summit

The Inkster Police Department wants all of their residents to be safe, especially their senior citizens. They held a Senior Crime Prevention Summit on Wednesday, November 15th at the Booker Dozier Recreation Center where residents of Inkster could come out and get some tips on how to be safe. There were tips on avoiding phone scams, being safe at home and Chief William Ratliff stressed that he wants to make sure that all of the seniors are protected.

Retired Detective Robert Lee spoke about how not to be a victim of scams through phone calls and emails. He mentioned that The Grandparent Phone Scam is popular. This is when people call and tell you that your grandchild is in danger and needs some money. Don't send them any money. He also enforced that people should not give out their social security number or banking information to anyone Retired Police Chief Isaiah McKinnon focused on tips for seniors staying safe in your home. First, don't let anyone in your house, no matter how nice they look. He also said remove the rugs on your floor so you won't trip and fall. He also cautioned seniors not to be out by themselves at night.


Walter Cooper and Chief Ratliff have prepared several pamphlets that explains numerous tips that seniors and other residents of Inkster can use to reduce the likelihood of being a victim of a crime.

To keep the attendees engaged, they also had prizes for trivia questions about Inkster. Other resources were provided by several vendors. The room was lined with businesses and nonprofits that had services to keep the seniors safe.
