The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) wishes all Muslims in the world a peaceful and blessed Ramadan. Ramadan is the holiest month for people of Muslim faith. It started today, March 11, 2023.
Ramadan is the Islamic month of fasting, worship, reflection, sharing and caring. This Ramadan falls amidst the ongoing genocidal war against the occupied Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. Palestinians in Gaza have been subject to an ongoing Israeli campaign of ruthless bombing and starvation. Israel has weaponized food, water and medicine for the past five months murdering more than 32,000 lives thus far with no end in sight. Seventy thousand are injured. Observers note that these numbers are an undercount. Gazans face an Israeli war aided and abetted by the US.
As a month of peace, this Ramadan is very bitter and very heavy for Palestinians in Gaza who are facing an organized campaign of starvation. Despite the misery of being deprived of food and water and the basic survival needs, Palestinians in Gaza are determined to fast the month and celebrate it. Five months of ongoing Israeli killing machine and the world is yet to impose a ceasefire. Without a ceasefire, the death machine marches on.
The Israeli killing machine continues. Israel has been bombing South Lebanon. Lebanese civilians have been indiscriminately targeted and murdered by Israel. These attacks have left thousands of civilians displaced and living under constant state of fear of death. This is adding to the already existing immense economic hardships that too many in Lebanon are not able to cope with.
President Biden promised a ceasefire by Ramadan. He failed to deliver because of the lack of genuine political will to attain it. The continued unlimited support of Israel is an immoral and failed policy. The only difference is the immensity of the avoidable suffering. The carnage continues because Mr. Biden is unwilling or unable to pressure Israel.
"We question President Biden's sincerity when he expresses concern for Palestinian lives while providing Israel with unlimited support, military and diplomatic," said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive director. "We need a ceasefire, a ceasefire is long overdue," added Hamad.
