Sabbath Middle School Continues their Community Read Day and Expands

Sabbath school readers and the senior citizens they read to at the River Rouge Library

In March a special two day reading event was held on the 14th and 15th at Sabbath Middle School. The event was in collaboration with Legacy of Literacy (LOL) Ms. Greer. They came together once again for the Community Read Day Event which turned into a two-day event. This was a huge success as a variety of readers shared their passion for reading with the scholars at Sabbath School. Top officials from the School Board, City, County, State and Federal along with community members volunteered their valuable time to interact with our scholars. The readers included River Rouge School Board - Mitch Doig to Mayor Pro-tem Patty Campbell, Wayne County Commissioner - Cara Clemente, State Representative - Tyrone Carter, U.S Congressman - Shri Thanedar along with a retired This year the Community Read event was expanded to a second day. Organizer, Selena Smith wanted to continue the vision of the founder Alma Greer of Legacy of Literacy, by incorporating Real Kids Read to the Senior citizens in the City of River Rouge. Many scholars from Sabbath Middle School (grades 6th -8th) were very excited to participate in the second day of this year's Community Read Event. They felt that it builds character, confidence and a sense of pride to connect with the seniors at the River Rouge Public Library.

The students rotated to each table and read aloud to the seniors. Wonderful insightful conversations were shared between each group as the seniors passed on their knowledge and wisdom to the youth. The community seniors were very proud that the students were sharing their talents with them as well. The event wouldn't have been a success without the support of Sabbath Middle School and Legacy of Literacy Organization for the first time partnering with River Rouge Public Library for Real Kids Read. Special acknowledgement goes to Sabbath School Principal Wyatt Jones III, Ms King AEO and Secretary Mrs. Morris, Dr. Mongo Literacy Consultant of LOL Organization, Cosponsors from the Reggie McKenzie Foundation, Mayor Campbell, staff at River Rouge Library and Gurpreet Samra for making this event come together for our students and seniors

The students returned to Sabbath School for a Pizza Party, free books and reading certificates. This was courtesy of Legacy of Literacy Organization and Capital One Bank. They are looking to expand on this two day event as they continue to promote literacy.
