April 11, 2024

Community members came out to celebrate NAACP Founder's Day with a Membership Drive to Reactivate the Highland Park NAACP held at Faith Tabernacle Church in Highland Park

The NAACP Michigan State Conference has been actively working to reactivate the NAACP Highland Park Branch. The Organizing Committee has been meeting at different locations and virtually throughout Highland Park since November 2023 to reach community members throughout Highland Park. The reactivation of the NAACP Highland Park Branch is vital to the community.

The NAACP is the oldest civil rights organization in the world. For 115 years the members have been advocating for laws and policies to improve communities, supporting access to quality education, healthcare and economic opportunities and participating in voter registration and "Get-Out-the-Vote" campaigns.

A Community Membership Drive Meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 17th at the Highland Park Recreation Center at 10 Pitkin St. at 5:30pm. Gina Wilson Steward, who is the 4th Vice President of the Michigan State Conference and serves as the Area Director says, "the Organizing Committee has been working hard to get the necessary 100 members needed to reactivate the NAACP Highland Park Branch." Anyone who is interested in becoming a Charter Member of the Reactivated NAACP Highland Park Branch should come to the meeting.

Valeria Berry serves as the Chairperson for the Organizing Committee, she says, "If you live or work in the City of Highland Park, we need your voice and your energy. The branch is looking for people from age 21 to 100 years of age to join with us. Everyone's voice is important."

As a member of the NAACP, people will make a difference each and every day in this fight and become part of a vibrant community that stands for justice and equality. The NAACP relies on the commitment and dedication of its members to help stand up to racial disparities that are still too prevalent in America today.
