Ecorse Senior Center Hosts Mother's Day Brunch

Nearly three dozen mothers were treated to a Mother's Day celebration at the Ethel Stevenson Senior and Community Center in Ecorse last Tuesday, May 14. Ecorse Parks and Recreation Staff Member Veronica Jackson explains, "We do it every year and this year we have something new-they're going to be making candles. We catered the food and we just have fun. They just sit and socialize and get out of the house, and they exchange phone numbers of people they meet here and keep in contact." In addition to a catered lunch, the event included a raffle and prizes and plenty of socializing and visiting. Representatives from Brook's Candles, located in Southland Mall were on hand to guide the ladies in making a homemade scented candle to enjoy at home.

Ecorse Parks and Recreation Director Drew Covington says both special events and daily and weekly activities held at the Senior Center give older residents an opportunity to get away from home and be social. "This was open to all mothers in the city of Ecorse," he explains. "A lot of the older women say they like to get out and socialize as well as come up here and volunteer and help out because it gives them something fun to do."
