Detroit

On Saturday, January 25 a Winterfest will be held at Rouge Park at Lahser Road and the Service Yard Road, just north of the Buffalo Soldiers horse stables, from noon to 4 p.m. The fun will include games, food, giveaways, bonfire, ice fishing, sledding, live music and more. The event is free and all are welcome to attend. Dress appropriately for the cold.

For anyone who may be interested in being a Big Brother or Big Sister, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast Michigan is hosting an informational program called Big Brothers Big Sisters in Action: You Can Empower the Next Generation on Tuesday, January 28 at the Durfee Innovation Society Community Center, located at 2470 Collingwood Street in Detroit. Friends of the Detroit River will present Shiver on the River on Saturday, February 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Belle Isle Park. The event will feature ice carvings, magic show, winter birding, and concessions for sale. Both the Dossin Great Lakes Museum and the Belle Isle Nature Center will host indoor events for all ages. Garden City

The Garden City City Council will meet on Monday, January 27 beginning at 7 p.m. in the Civic Center Council Chambers located at 6000 Middlebelt Road.

Inkster

The Leanna Hicks Public Library offers tutoring assistance for middle and high school students with math and science on the first Saturday each month from noon to 2 p.m. Please register at [email protected] .

Livonia

AA of Greater Detroit hosts AA Sunday Serenity on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. at the Livonia Senior Center, located at 15218 Farmington Road at Five Mile Road. The meeting is open format meaning all are welcome.

Wayne

Northwest Wayne Face Addiction Now (FAN)--formerly Families Against Narcotics-- will host a public forum on Monday, February 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the HYPE Recreation Center, located at 4635 Howe Road. The topic of discussion will be Defying the Odds-How to Conquer Your Challenges and Win. The evening will include guest speaker Zach Gowen who had one leg amputated at age 8 yet overcame great odds; also personal stories from those in recovery and how they navigated challenges, and an opportunity to connect with others. The event is free and open to everyone. Refreshments will be provided. Free Narcan Training will take place prior to the meeting at 5:30.

Westland

St. Mary Cause of Our Joy Catholic Church hosts a Forgotten Harvest Mobile Food Pantry the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 9 to 11 a.m. The mobile food pantry will be available on Tuesday, January 28 to distribute free food including fresh fruit and vegetables. The mobile pantry may be cancelled in the event of severe weather; call the church to confirm the service is available at 734-425-4421. The church is located at 8200 N. Wayne Road, just north of Warren Road.
