Allen Park

The Downtown Allen Park Farmers and Makers Market is in full swing through October 25 at the corner of Park and Harrison Avenues. The Market runs each Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. and features fresh produce, plants, herbs, baked goods, and handcrafted items.

Detroit

On Saturday, August 10, an Emergency Preparedness Fair will be held at the Kemeny Recreation Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Come and learn about preparing for an emergency. Resources will include chemical and hazardous material awareness, family emergency planning, gun safety, fire safety, and a sign-up opportunity for Marathon Alert Notifications. Both the Detroit Police and Fire Department will be on hand, as well as the Bomb Squad, K-9 Units, and Mounted Police Units. Free ice cream and refreshments and children’s activities will be part of the fun. To find out more, call 313-400-3331. The Kemeny Rec Center is located at 2260 S. Fort Street.

Inkster

Walk a Mile Wednesday will take place with the Inkster Police Department on Wednesday, August 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meet up at the Booker Dozier Recreation Center and get to know members of the city’s police department, chat, and share concerns. For more information call 313-460-6698. The Booker Dozier Rec Center is located at 2025 Middlebelt Road.

The Inkster Task Force Farmer’s Market is operating on Wednesday evenings from 4 to 7 p.m. through September at its new location at 27301 South River Park Drive near the old city hall and amphitheater, northeast of Michigan Avenue and Inkster Road. Eastern Market’s pop –up stand will be present as well, along with artisans and craft vendors, and cooking demonstrations. The market will accept EBT, SNAP, and Senior Market Fresh.

River Rouge

Food Truck Fridays continues on Friday, August 9 and 23 beginning at noon in front of Memorial Park on Jefferson Avenue.

Westland

The Westland Farmers and Artisans Market will be open Thursdays through October 10 from 3 to 7 p.m. and is located at 1901 N. Carlson at the Farmers Market and Lions Club Pavilion.

The Norwayne Citizens Council will host a Back to School Extravaganza and Movie Night on Friday, August 9 beginning at 5:30 p.m. with Mad Science Festivities. A backpack giveaway along with dinner and refreshments will be part of the event. The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be shown at 6:45. Bring lawn chairs or blankets and bug spray. The event will be held at the Jefferson Barns Community Center, located at 32150 Dorsey.

Gleaners Community Food Bank will bring its mobile drive-thru food distribution to Westland on Thursday, August 15 at Marshall Upper Elementary School, located at 35100 Bayview Street. Drive-up food distribution will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. No appointment is necessary.
