Ecorse Police Officers recognized for helping to keep the community safe

December 1, 2022

Ecorse Police Officers were recognized during the Ecorse City Council meeting for their dedication to keeping the communities safe.

On 9/8/2022, Officer Duane Pennyman and Mitchell Heaney @ 10:35 am, responded to a citizen report of 2 subjects walking in the area of 19th and Francis, who were clearly carrying firearms. Upon their arrival, the suspects fled into the city of River Rouge and were pursued by the officers. Keeping constant communication and coordination, they were able to apprehend one of the suspects, who had thrown his weapon on the ground shortly before being captured. River Rouge Ordinance Officer Carl Smart also responded to the area and helped with obtaining other items the suspect discarded. This arrest was done without the officers having to use deadly force although the suspect was armed.

On 11/2/2022, Cpl. Jarrod Fedea observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed heading s/b on High street toward Outer Drive driving on a flat tire Fedea along with officer Cody Staub and Ryan Kalis were at that scene on another call when Fedea broke away from them to initiate a traffic stop. Upon approaching the driver, Fedea noticed he was fidgety and acting in a suspicious manner. He asked the driver for his license, registration and proof of insurance. The driver didn't have it and was attempting to reach under the passenger seat but Fedea kept him from doing so. At that time Fedea noticed several rounds of ammunition on the floorboard of the car and ordered the driver out. By that time officers Staub and Kalis arrived. A search of the vehicle found a 9mm semi-automatic pistol commonly known on the streets as a "Mac-10. Cpl. Mercado then arrived and between him, Staub and Kalis, they recovered a large amount of ammunition for that weapon and a box for another firearm.

In both these instances the officers bravery, awareness, experience and teamwork possibly prevented someone from getting hurt or killed.and the community is safer for it.

Thanks and Congratulations to all of these officers!
