New Jerusalem Church Presents Annual Community Fest

School is now in session! For some families, it's an exciting time of the year. However, it can feel like a burden for others, similarly to the holiday season. Around this each year, community leaders and organizations will often sponsor a back-to-school drive or giveaway and that is exactly what took place in the city of Inkster.

New Jerusalem Baptist Church presented their annual community fest this year, sponsored by the women's ministry. The event aims to bring together residents of all ages and backgrounds for the day of fun, entertainment and to invoke community engagement.

The "Community Fest" featured live musical performances by Detroit and Metro Detroit artists, bands and, there were a variety of food vendors and local entrepreneurs. It was truly a community event by every meaning of the words. Residents had their pick because there was something for everyone to enjoy.

For some residents and participants, it's all about the backpack giveaway. Volunteers are excited to see the smiles and the gratitude that is shown and the kids are excited to pick out their favorite-colored backpack. "Our goal is to provide 100 backpacks and supplies to the local community and over 200 backpacks to Inkster Preparatory Academy and American International Academy", said, Kim Willis, Executive Director and First Lady of New Jerusalem Baptist Church (New J).

In the black community, the local church was a place that many activities took place. The church, was a safe haven and a community support to those who needed help. There is truly a need for churches to become that support system in the communities that they dwell. When asked, "How does it feel to be a part of a church gives back willingly to its community?", Executive Director Kim Willis stated, "It's always rewarding giving back in any capacity. I'm thankful for a servant leader who understands the importance of being involved in the community."

"Rallying around to support individuals and families through back-to-school drives is crucial because it reflects the essence of community and compassion", said, Jarrett Waddy, Community Leader and New J member. He continues by saying, "As leaders in the community, it's our responsibility to extend a helping hand to those in need."

School is in session and now there are families who have one less burden. One can say that, New J Community Fest exhibits community service in various capacities that is and continues to be solid and effective. Maybe next year, you'll be compelled to contribute to your community by sponsoring an event that will assist others.
