Have you seen the movie that many have been waiting for? It's here and has been in theatres for two weeks now! The Color Purple (2023) takes the classic film and masterfully combines the Broadway musical with the legendary book, by author Alice Walker. The film tells the tale of love and resilience of one woman's journey to independence, that spans over a decade long in the rural South, during the 1900s.

The new film is an American coming-to-age period of drama film directed by Blitz Bazawule and script written by Marcus Gardley. Centered around the life of Celie, a young African American woman who experienced living life in the tumultuous era of American History. She's seen as a young naïve woman, who is less than any man and is forced to marry a man who treats her worse than the bottom of the shoes he wears.

This star-studded movie featured a cast like no other and they did not disappoint.

Fantasia Barrino, R&B singer, former American Idol winner, former Broadway actress and now debuting in her first motion picture as actress who plays, the legendary character, Celie. Oprah said, "Her rawness and vulnerability, along with her singing talent, means that Fantasia is going to knock it out the park". Those words are no lie, you will see!

Next is Danielle Brooks as Sofia, who is a close friend to Celie. She too, gives a powerful performance. One that lives you knowing that even in that era, she commanded a room and mandated her respect! Now on to Shug Avery's character. She is portrayed by none other than Taraji P. Henson. Taraji gives the character pure rawness, sex appeal and yet still, as a grown woman, she looks for her daddy's approval. In addition, to wanting the outwardly affection of love from her father, the pastor. She's lived a life that has graced her with some wisdom and she uses that to teach and be someone that Celie can look up to for guidance.

On to the men who are equally important to this film. Corey Hawkins plays the character Harpo, who is the husband to Sophia. Throughout the movie, Harpo was on a journey himself, to find his voice as he sought after manhood like his father. The only thing is that, early on, he was faced with knowing that he was not his father and the woman he married wouldn't tolerate it.

Minster who was previously played by legendary actor Danny Glover, was played by the incredible actor, Colman Domingo. A role that is faced with portraying the negative characteristics of a man during that era, as an abuser and a force to be reckoned with to Celie. Oprah said, "He can bring the multidimensional quality to Mister, there are levels of Mister that you did not know. We're trying to give those to him, so you don't just see the mean side." Then we have the Grammy award winning singer, H.E.R. as Spueak and Halle Bailey as Young Nettie.

During its opening weekend, the Color Purple quickly surpassed an important milestone at the domestic box office on New Year's Eve! The movie adaptation quickly entered the Top 50 highest-performing domestic movie released of 2023 in just eight days and it opened at number #1 on Christmas Day. The Color Purple, has a bold new take on the beloved classic. To date, it has made $50 million dollars at the box office. Currently, the movie's budget has not been released to the public. However, it became the second-biggest Christmas Day opening of all time. This motion picture invites you into a world of sisterhood of three women who share one unbreakable bond. The Color Purple (2023) is scheduled to be released in theatres globally on January 18, 2024. I highly recommend grabbing your movie, grab you some snacks and head to theatres. This is a movie you don't want to miss in theatres.
